The Story

Designed by the architect James Gillespie, the original building of Portree House was started in 1810 and completed in 1817, the cost being in the region of £3500! Lord MacDonald of Sleat built the house for the chamberlain of his estates who was responsible for the collection of rents and other monies owing to the MacDonalds.

The first chamberlain we can trace, Dr Alexander ‘Ban’ MacLeod who was related to the Macdonalds at Viewfield House, Portree, lived in the house in the mid 1820’s. He was born in North Uist, trained as a medical doctor and was a very popular and respected man. He was responsible for the original Tower on the ‘Lump’ in Portree, which he intended to be a museum and pleasure garden – this was a replica of a tower he had previously built in Harris.

After Dr MacLeod, various doctors and dentists lived in the house; the last person to have full residence was Lady Iona MacDonald who died in 1972.

Portree House is a grade ‘B’ listed building, which means it is protected by various rules and regulations set out by Historic Scotland controlling the development of old premises.

Today, a stunning refurbishment has given this Georgian building a total facelift, creating a contemporary Restaurant and Bar. The shades of dusky pink, olive green and lilac are teamed with terracotta tiled floors and exquisite lighting – this is a cosmopolitan, chic place to chill. Check out the artwork, girls – especially the exquisite piece in the ladies!

We have a Civil Wedding License and have hosted many weddings from small family gatherings to larger groups in lovely marquees in the gardens.

The new Marmalade concept has already brought many visitors and locals back to visit – we very much look forward to welcoming you.
